In a case stemming back to the hours after Barack Obama was announced as the president of the United States, another white man has pleaded guilty to a crime against a predominantly Black church.

Thomas Gleason Jr., 22, pleaded guilty to setting fire and destroying a Black church in Massachusetts.

Changing his plea in U.S. District Court Tuesday, Gleason pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy against civil rights; damage or destruction to religious property; and the use of fire to commit a felony.

Gleason was one of three that were responsible for the act committed on Macedonia Church of God back on Nov. 5 of 2008.

His sentencing is set for Oct. 1.  He faces a minimum sentence of 10 years on the charge of use of fire to commit a felony and a maximum sentence of 40 years on the charge of destruction of religious property.

Gleason also faces a maximum of 10 years on the conspiracy charge.

C0-defendant Benjamin Haskell, 23, made a plea deal last week that will see him spending nine years behind bars.

An FBI affidavit revealed when Haskell was asked why he was part of such a crime, he stated “because it was a black church”.

According to the prosecution the men were acting out of anger once it was revealed that Obama was president and retaliated by setting the church ablaze.

In regards to how the men were caught, investigators stated that an informant led to the capture.
