Jay-Z Ranked The ‘47th Greatest Artist Of All Time'

VH1 debuted their “100 Greatest Artists Of All Time” program this week, chronicling the best artists in music history.

Jay-Z ranked fairly high on the list, coming in at 47.

His wife Beyonce came in at number 52, while the top spot was taken by The Beatles who beat out Michael Jackson and Bob Dylan for number 1.

Uhhh…

NWA, Public Enemy, LL Cool J, Outkast, Tupac and Biggie also made the list.

    I think the list is pretty legit. Hard to argue the Beatles and MJ as the top two. No one sold more records than the Beatles or had more influence on other artists (including MJ who owned the Beatles music rights and recorded with Paul McArtney). Once you get out of the t0p-10, its easy to argue that one artist is better than another, but I think the top-10 was pretty dead on, even if I dont care for all of them. Hard to argue record sales and influence.

        Who's saying MJ sold more than the Beatles? Not even CLOSE. Beatles sold TWICE as many certified in the US (200 million vs 89 for MJ.) The whole list is lame: it's totally subjective...what qualifies as "greatest?"

        MJ re-entered the charts after his death? The Beatles sold 2.5 million copies of remasters more than thirty years old. And the reason you don't see them in recent "top sales" figures is because everything they did was before the Soundscan era. Duh.

        Hey Elvis outsold MJ quite nicely too. So, no racism...just numbers, or a totally subjective opinion, which means nothing.

    Micheal Jackson is only number 3 because he died recently, so he got a huge amount of sympathy votes. His music wasn't that good... Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, etc. are way better musiscally. This list is pretty white though, although The Beatles do deserve the number one spot I don't see how The Beach Boys or U2 are better then 2pac or Biggie. Or Nas and Jay-Z.

      Michael Jackson is just as influential as The Beatles or Elvis. don't get me wrong i respect them both. Wikipedia ranks MJ #3 for the best selling music artist of all time and he sold less than the top 2. Check the stats, Michael is most influential around the world than any other artist and his impact is unprecedented.

He was the first to come out with movie videos, the first to include dance, and one of the first black men to write his own music, plus the first black to be accepted on mtv videos, and has the most awards of any artist, so tell me he's not worthy of the spot. You cant get mad cause your beloved white artists didnt make the cut, so you belittle black artists like him, biggie, nas, 2pac, and jayz.

    reading these comments makes me glad that musicians voted and not the public. this is about the music not who's race created the best music. you don't hear latinos or asians crying about being left off the list. and yes santana deserved to be included. the top 5 are pretty solid though i have to disagree with dylan being number 3 but pretty solid list. beyonce, jay z and justin timberlake do not belong on this list what so ever. they are not 1 of the 100 best artsit of all time. people keep crying racism but there were some notable "white" artist left off. garth brooks and stevie ray vaughn deserve to be on that list because of the influence they had on music. and some black artist that belong on it is the father of the delta blues robert johnson because without him there is no rock,funk or hip hop. also john coltrane belongs on that list. but i bet most of you don't even know who those four artist are. unfortunatley people believe what the media, radio and itunes tells them what is great music. there are many great artist that are not known or popular in all generes if you search for it. when beyonce is being thought of as great it just shows how little people know about great music.

She has had so much influence on pop music that will last way longer than anyone knowing who Beyonce ever was. This list was voted on my respectable artists who know what they're talking about. The top 20 is pretty legit. Nirvana is my personal favorite!

    I can't believe that Rush (and Progressive Music in General) gets so disrespected. Rush is the 3rd highest selling band of all time (Platinum & Gold Records) behind the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. They've been around for nearly 40 years! They've influenced bands on this list. And unlike their 70s contemporaries (Zeppelin #4 / Floyd #18) they're still going strong. I mean, only 75? Come on! They should be at the worst a top-30 group...

    Jay-z should have been higher. How is the greatest rapper of all time not higher then Van Halen, Aerosmith, U2, Queen, etc.. The run that he has had as a premier artist is rivaled only by acts like the rolling stones. He's top 20 at least, top ten in my opinion.

Let's take Tina Turner, for example, who is on the list, and deserves to be, but who is most well known for her cover of Proud Mary which was written and sung by CCR 2 years earlier but I don't see them on the list! You could look up almost any artist rapping or singing the most popular songs this decade and most would have have lyrics or music ripped off from old songs!       to the person who said that Michael Jackson was in the top 5 of Vh1's last list of greatest artists, you're wrong. he was ranked a low #40 in Vh1's 1998 list of greatest artists. you can't tell me that his death didn't have anything to do with his 38-spot jump to #2. and think about it, what did he do musically between 1998 and 2010? besides put out that crappy Invincible album? if he had put out a bunch of great albums in those 12 years or did a lot of touring and performing in that time, i could possibly understand him being raised to #2.

    i was surpised at the list . i don't understand how jazz was not represented ,there was no coltrane ,no miles davis ,no thelonis monk .bb king is one of the greatist musicians of all time ,yet he's left of the list . no sam cooke,and country music was only represented by johnny cash.how is it that muddy waters was left off ,no stevie ray vaughn(one of the greatest guitar players of all time). i wonder what was the criteria for voting because i see artist like the supremes ,tony bennett ,and frank sinatra left off . the only thing i could figure in leaving off those great artist is that they didn't write most of their music ,with sinatra and bennett singing cl*****ic standards and supremes songs written by great motown team and other artist ..also ,not to say an artist like usher belongs up there ,but how do you have justin timberlake and not usher ,if you're going the timberlake route ,then you have to have usher. this countdown was very rock band heavy .

And to those who say the beatles have sold more etc is a slightly ridiculous statistic seeing as they released many more albums then Michael Jackson. Comparing album by album between the two would show you clearly Michael Jackson sold more per release.

    P.S. On a bigger poll, Michael Jackson has been nominated best artist of all time on CNN. End of. The beatles were good, but they weren't the best.

    *****ody agrees with this list. Any list where 'beyonce" places higher than Mariah and Whitney isn't legit. This is about Music, not endorsements, films and clothing lines. Whitney tours grossed more than Destiny Child and Beyonce' solo put together lol. WHitney first album outsold beyonce's entire career. WHitney was the first black female artist getting major rotation on MTV. List don't change this dramatically year to year, unless somebody is paying out alot of money.     First things first....... how come Muddy Water nor Miles Davis were on the list. The fact they were omitted speaks volumes.
    Second, several of the "artists" on the list are just carbon copies of artists that SHOULD have been on the list. For example, Janet Jackson should have been on the list instead of Beyonce.
    Third, I'm happy hip hop was included, but Jay Z at 47 ?. Lets be really real, he is good, but he is not as poetic as Nas, as witty as Eminem, as p*****ionate as Tupac, or as historically relevant as Public Enemy , NWA, Beastie Boys and Run DMC. Financially, he has them beat, but as far artistic value.....no.
    Finally, I was not surprised the Beatles were placed at number one. Any time they put out the "greatest of all times" list, they always remain on a pedestal. Why?
    Anyway, just my thoughts. If people agree or call me a hater, it wont make or break my day.

    I agree about Bon Jovi....for them to not be anywhere in the top 100....come on! ...But then, remember - these votes came from industry people, not fans. Big difference - shouldn't be, but unfortunately, it is. They've never gotten the industry/critical acclaim they deserve.
