Groundhog Punxsutawney Phil Predicts An Early Spring
Groundhog Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early spring today for the annual Groundhog’s Day celebration.
The animal, who takes his name from his hometown of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, did not see his shadow this year confirming that he “expects” an early end to winter and early start to spring.
A smaller than average crowd traveled to witness today’s weather forecast where Phil was also asked to predict if the Pittsburgh Steelers would win Sunday’s Super Bowl.
Punxsutawney Phil did not pick a winner.
Including today, Phil has seen his shadow 98 times according to the Punxsutawneyy Groundhog Club’s Inner Circle, the organizers of the annual event.
Groundhog Day comes from the German superstition that says if a hibernating animal sees its shadow on February 2 the winter will last another six weeks, if not, spring will come early.
