Black Women Criticize "Sl*tWalk" Organization

Black Women Pissed Off By "Sl*tWalk"

If you haven't received the memo, an organization called Sl*tWalk will hold a march in New York's Union Square on Saturday.

SlutWalk NYC is "part of a worldwide grassroots movement challenging rape culture, victim-blaming and sl-t-shaming, and working to end sexual and domestic violence."

Although the walk is for a good cause, and similar Sl*tWalks have taken place in Boston, Denver and New Delhi, India, SlutWalk NYC has caught backlash due to women "dressing like sl-ts" during their protests.

Members of Black Women's Blueprint wrote a letter to describe their distaste of Sl*tWalk.

The letter states:

We are deeply concerned.

As Black women and girls we find no space in Sl-tWalk, no space for participation and to unequivocally denounce rape and sexual assault as we have experienced it...As Black women, we do not have the privilege or the space to call ourselves “sl-t” without validating the already historically entrenched ideology and recurring messages about what and who the Black woman is.

We don't have the privilege to play on destructive representations burned in our collective minds, on our bodies and souls for generations.

Although we understand the valid impetus behind the use of the word “sl-t” as language to frame and brand an anti-rape movement, we are gravely concerned.
