ESPN premiered Benji last night, the sad and cautionary tale of star basketball player Ben Wilson from the Southside of Chicago. The Simeon High School product, which also produced Chicago Bulls star Derrick Rose, was gunned down on the eve of his senior season during a November day when he left school to escort his girlfriend home.
The saddest part about this film is that it doesn't feel dated at all. With today's social issues surrounding the violent Chicago streets, Benji feels as appropriate as ever. Even as the school currently boasts the best high school basketball player in America, Jabari Parker. If you were befuddled on why Derrick Rose shed tears on the day of his media day in Chicago with Adidas, you'll understand right after watching this film.
