A three-year-old South Carolina boy was killed while playing with a pink gun he thought was a toy, late last week.

Temorej Smith, of Greenville, and his seven-year-old sister were playing with the weapon, while their grandparents were in another room of their apartment. Smith was fatally struck in the head.

His parents were not at home during the incident.

Police have ruled the shooting an accident, but have not yet completed their investigation. It has not been determined if the child shot himself in the head, or was shot.

“If you have guns, if you own guns mostly he would prefer you have them in a lock box,” said Jonathan Bragg of the Greenville Police Department.

Smith’s death has led to local activist and founder of “Put Down the Guns Young People,” Jack Logan, handing out 55 gun locks at a Burger King down the street from where the shooting took place. “I don’t want to see parents having guns lying around when a child could maybe get his or her hands on a gun.”

Funeral services for Smith will be held this afternoon at the Golden View Baptist Church.  His remains were placed at the church for viewing two hours ahead of the ceremony, which will be followed by a burial in the church cemetery.

Smith is described as a “kind and loving person that will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of being in his presence.”
