Jerame Reid, a 36-year-old Black man who was shot and killed by New Jersey police last December, was seen on video surrendering to cops before they gunned him down. The video supports eyewitness accounts that the police acted hastily during the Dec. 30 traffic stop and that Reid posed no threat.

When the news initially broke at the top of the year, Bridgeton police said that Reid had a handgun but several eyewitnesses contradicted the report. In a police video that was released Tuesday (Jan. 2), Reid was apparently unarmed with his hands up before officers Braheme Days and Roger Worley the man several times.

Press Of Atlantic City has more:

Jerame C. Reid was unarmed and had his hands in the air when he was shot and killed by city police officers the evening of Dec. 30, police video shows.

Video taken by a Bridgeton police cruiser’s dashboard camera also shows Officers Braheme Days and Roger Worley shooting at Reid several times after an apparently unarmed Reid got out of the car in which he was a passenger.

Bridgeton police and the county Prosecutor’s Office declined to comment on the content of the video.

As noted in the report, the video does not show what was happening inside the car before Reid attempted to step out. There appeared to be a struggle between Reid and Days just before the hail of gunfire.

Also curious was that Reid, who did time for an attempted homicide charge in 1994 involving police officers, was known to Officer Days. Days called Reid “Jerome,” which was a name he was previously known by.

A family attorney for the Reid family will examine the video but decided not to comment further. On Twitter, discussions under the #JerameReid hashtag are beginning to appear with several comments expressing shock over what is depicted in the video clip.
