Roughly a year after he compared himself to Walt Disney and Steve Jobs, BET is presenting (presented) Kanye West with the Visionary Award at the 2015 BET Honors. But just how much of a visionary is Mr. West?
With all due respect, trends like Ivy League style, signature athletic shoes, and posse production teams were ushered in by the likes of Grand Puba, MC Hammer, and Puff Daddy.
Before you see West take home the hardware, have a look at 10 trends you can blame on Kanye West.

Leather Jogging Pants
Kanye wasn’t lying when he told Zane Lowe he put a lot of people up on leather jogging pants. They look pretty suspect and require the hardest of sags, but ‘Yeezy taught us about this one.

Shutter Shades
Your Facebook photo albums probably feature a pic of you or at least one of your friends falling victim to the shutter shades of the Glow In The Dark Tour and Graduation era.
Amber Rose
Unless you were at the strip club raining ones on her or a video casting director, you didn’t know who Amber was before Yeezy.
Maison Martin Margiela
West was repping hard for the Belgian designer before A$AP Rocky, Jadakiss, Wiz Khalifa and others began dropping his name. Maybe that’s why Margiela designed those bejeweled masks Kanye wears on tour.
Rappers At Women’s Fashion Week Shows
For whatever it’s worth, let’s not pretend like Kanye wasn’t taking up those FROW spots next to Kelly Osbourne and other Beckys during Fashion Week.
Paul McCartney In Urban Music Again
There’s photo proof of one of McCartney’s original “urban music” collaborations. But he kind of fell back on them after the cheesiness of “Ebony And Ivory.” It didn’t help when Michael Jackson bought The Beatles catalog. With “Only One” and “FourFiveSeconds,” it looks like Sir Paul is back on the R&B charts.
Rappers In Dresses
Yeah, ‘Ye…you can have that one.
Jacking T-Pain’s Auto-tune Wave
After West flew T-Pain out to Hawaii, he co-opted his Auto-tune singing style and made 808s & Heartbreak. That style has evolved and similarly been co-opted by Future, Lil Wayne, and others.
Restoring The Kardashian Hood Pass
Kris Humphries and Scott Disick were slowly undoing what years of rocking with the likes of O.J. Simpson, Ray J, Lamar Odom, and Reggie Bush did for the Kardashian family name. Luckily, Kanye (and French Montana) came to remedy that situation.
The Return Of “Chipmunk Soul”
RZA and DJ Muggs had been speeding up Soul samples all throughout the ‘90s. But during a time dominated by Timbaland, The Neptunes, Dr. Dre, and Swizz Beatz, Kanye dusted off the technique and catapulted himself to stardom.
