Sony released the newest trailer for this summer’s new Spider-Man film, a reboot to a franchise many fans believed hadn’t quite gone stale. Regardless of public opinion, director Mark Webb and lead actor Andrew Garfield are charging full-speed ahead with a new direction—or so it seemed until this new preview.
While the teaser for The Amazing Spider-Man looked to have a darker, moodier edge than Sam Raimi’s original trilogy, this new trailer plays it much safer, sticking to iffy one-liners and choreographed snark to convince viewers how “fun” this one’s going to be. Maybe the marketing team got cold feet after hearing the gloomy teaser worried fans, but they probably should’ve stayed brave. At least that would’ve promised the kind of Spider-Man movie no one’s seen before.
