Wayne Cooper was the lead singer of the funk band Cameo. The 13-member group was originally known as the New York City Players, before changing their name to escape a lawsuit. The group hit it big with their first Top-40 hit “Word Up.” Although it was widely reported that he died in a plane crash, Cooper died from AIDS in 1984.
