Help has arrived for the state of New Jersey. The area, where Superstorm Sandy made landfall as a tropical cyclone was battered by the storm’s harsh winds, and flooded by the ocean, prompting the Navy to send three helicopters carrier ships to help with recovery efforts, Wednesday (Oct. 31) morning.

The USS Wasp, the USS Mesa Verde and the USS Carter Hall will give landing areas for the U.S. Coast Guard, and other aircrafts, for rescue purposes.

Assistance came ahead of President Obama’s visit to the state, scheduled for later in the day. Upon his arrival, the commander in chief will meet with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who will lead him through the area.

Christie, a Republican and supporter of Mitt Romney, has been vocal about his satisfaction with the president’s speedy response to the natural disaster that has devastate the state, and surrounding areas. “Tomorrow recovery begins. Today was a day of sorrow,” Christie said during a news conference Tuesday (Oct. 30). “There’s nothing wrong with that. So long as sorrow doesn’t replace resilience, we’ll be just fine.”

Although he is hopeful that the state can be restored, areas like the Jersey Shore—made popular by the MTV reality show of the same name—were engulfed by the Atlantic Ocean. Fires have also erupted around the shore destroying approximately 14 homes. Firefighters have not been able to distinguish the blazes due to damaged roads.

Over in New York, the MTA subway service is still out of commission, but the New York Stock Exchange has reopened, after being closed for two days.
