The damage control has officially begun for Mitt Romney. Not long after  leaked footage of him calling voters in support of President Obama “dependent on government” and  feeling “entitled” to things like health care, the Republican candidate offered up an explanation.

Falling short of completely recanting his explosive statements, which some read as further proof of his lack of understanding of the middle class, Romney merely acknowledged that he could have used different wording. “I am sure I can state it more clearly and effectively than I did in a setting like that,” he told reporters at an event at the Segerstrom Center  for the Arts Monday (Sept. 17).

According to the father of five, the short clip did not capture his entire message. “I am talking about a political process of drawing people in my campaign. … My campaign is about helping people take more responsibility.” Raising the question of whether or not the country is in a better state since Obama took office, Romney explained that his speech was “a question about the direction of the country.”

The video came from a May 17 fundraiser at the Boca Raton, FL. home of investment banker, Marc Leder, that was closed to the press.
