A quartet of intruders picked the wrong house when they broke into and entered the New Mexican residence of Joe Torrez.
Torrez, 27 just happened to be a trained mixed-martial artist and he was at home with his fiancée and her sister as well as his infant son when police say reported gang members Leonard Calvillo, Nathan Avalos and brothers Sal and Raymond Garces barged into the mobile home where the family lived. It was a violent payback stemming from an argument on New Year’s Day morning.
The would-be attackers got more they bargained for as Sal Garces eventually died from a stab wound and Avalos had to be hauled off in an ambulance. The odds of four against one is merely a warm-up for a MMA fighter.
Reports NYDaily News:
C.J. McElhinney, an attorney for Torrez, told the Sun-News witness said the attackers brought a crude shank and one picked up a knife once they forced their way inside.
“I’ll kill you and your family … I’ll go to your house,” Calvillo reportedly said.
Torrez endured only minor injuries, his lawyer said.
Calvillo and Raymond Garces were both arrested on charges of conspiracy and property damage after they ran from the house.
Torrez could face charges in the death of Sal Garces, authorities said.
His lawyer said Torrez was only defending himself and his family.
