Florida is the gift that keeps on giving. The latest bizarre news to arise from the Sunshine State involves a city official who was arrested for methamphetamine possession, and was later discovered to have a pipe hidden in his rectum.
Carlos López, 45, who was the former purchasing director in the city of Hialeah in Miami-Dade County, was arrested on Dec. 29 of last year for using meth while driving in Fort Lauderdale. According to the arrest report, López was cruising along a residential block slowly when several men approached his vehicle. The group of men ran off when they saw a cop car approaching. López sped off doing 50 in a 25 MPH zone before he was stopped.
In the arrest report, the officer’s name is listed as R. Goderstad and wrote that he noticed López displayed the effects of someone going through the rigors of a meth high. It was there the officer decided to delve into the matter more.

During the inspection, [Officer] Goderstad noticed that López had his pants unbuttoned and asked him if he was hiding something, the report said. López initially denied it.
The canine officer “began speaking with López at which time López admitted to have a methamphetamine glass pipe inside his anal cavity,” the police report said. “López then stated he placed it in his rectum as he was being pulled over so I wouldn’t find it if I searched his vehicle.”
Amazingly, López was transferred to a leadership position in the city administration instead of being fired. When asked why López retained his job, mayor Carlos Hernandez said the move was part of a city restructuring deal. However, documents show that López signed a “Last Chance” agreement on back in February as a result of the meth arrest.
López has been struggling with drug use on record since 2005, and has been suspended for reasons unknown a pair of times since working for the Hialeah administration since 1997.
