The general consensus around the world is that the Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao “Fight of the Century” was a bit of letdown (unsurprisingly). Perhaps what is more surprising is 1) Jamie Foxx was nabbed to perform the National Anthem in front of the millions of spectators and 2) He absolutely overwhelmed with his gospel-tinged rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
The look was supposed to be invaluable press for the Academy Award and Grammy winning star’s upcoming album Hollywood: A Story of a Dozen Roses but following his flat performance, those flowers withered and fell over to the ring side. The album is slated to be released on May 18 and will feature prominent Hip-Hop talent such as Pharrell, Fabolous, Wale, Kid Ink and Chris Brown, but unless one of the records has the potency of his biggest hit, “Blame It,” it’s doubtful that consumers won’t go into the project’s rollout with a cynical approach.
If Foxx’s face didn’t say everything his performance was not, high-profile pundits on Twitter certainly did.
Check out the Jamie Foxx National Anthem in the video below and peep the top backlash he got online. Some say the conversation was much more entertaining than the actual fight.
