Imagine if Django Unchained director Quentin Tarantino would have tackled a comic book adaptation as fans have been clamoring for? It could have happened – with Laurence Fishburne starring as super-powered African-American detective Luke Cage.
According to a recent MTV News interview, Tarantino, a known comics fan, after hitting it big with Reservoir Dogs, kicked around the idea of making a film around one of Marvel Comic’s first African-American superheroes, private detective Luke Cage (later starring alongside martial arts hero Iron Fist).
“After ‘Reservoir Dogs,’ I had considered doing a Luke Cage, Hero for Hire movie. [Hollywood producer] Ed Pressman owned the rights at that time, and we talked about it,” Tarantino said. “I talked to Larry Fish [Laurence Fishburne] about being Luke Cage, and he really liked that idea. Then I ended up writing Pulp Fiction.”
As a director, writer and producer, Quentin Tarantino has had in his hands in all types of films over the course of his 25-year career. From the aforementioned shoot-em-up flick Reservoir Dogs to the classic crime saga Pulp Fiction to the Blaxploitation homage Jackie Brown, Tarantino has proven he can create rich worlds for the big screen.
Pressed on whether he’d try to tackle the super hero genre at a later time, Tarantino shied away from a Marvel Comics character film but may have designs for his own. “My kind of feeling is if I wanted to do something like that, I’d want to create the superhero myself,” said the director.
If so, Samuel L. Jackson has to be a shoe-in for a role somehow.
