A student opened fire at a high school in Taft, Calif. this morning, wounding two people.
The unidentified suspect started shooting at Taft High School just after 9 a.m., hitting one person who sustained “major” injuries and was airlifted to a local hospital. A second victim was treated for less dangerous wounds.
Police rushed to the scene and apprehended the shooter, who used a shotgun to carry out the attack. Students fled to safety, and made phone calls to their parents, while the school remained on lockdown. “Officers are going room to room in the school trying to clear the building,” a communications officer told the New York Daily News.
It is unclear if there were any others injured.
The central California town is located roughly 40 miles south of Bakersfield and has a population of less than 10,000 people.
This shooting comes less than a month after the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. The aftermath of the tragedy has raised the debate over gun control and prompted President Obama to start a committee attempting to deal with the issue of gun violence around the country.
