The Cook County court system has had enough of Shermain Miles. The 51-year-old is nearing 400  (396 to be exact) arrests since 1978, and a judge believes mental health and substance abuse issues need to be addressed.

During a court hearing in Chicago Monday (June 10), Miles was sentenced to a treatment for mental health and addiction.

With so many busts on the books, Judge Peggy Chiampas felt it necessary to offer Miles some support. “All of us are reaching out to you and offering you, maybe for the first time in your life, a hand, OK? But you’ve got to reach out and grab all of our hands as well.”

Miles was grateful. “I just want to thank you,” she told Chiampas. “I’m not that person.”

Chiampas gave Miles credit for time served on charges stemming from an attack on pedestrians and a city alderman last summer, as well as drinking alcohol in a public way, and trespassing.

The treatment sentence was in exchange for a guilty plea.
