Anthony Mackie Reveals He Was Suprised By Emmy Nomination
Araya Doheny / Anthony Mackie

Anthony Mackie has put in the work to have what many would consider a great Hollywood career, but sadly, he has never received the award recognition he deserves. Therefore, it came as a shock to him when he learned he was nominated for an Emmy.

Currently promoting season two of the Peacock original series Twisted Metal, Mackie stopped by the Jimmy Fallon show to talk about the series based on the iconic PlayStation video game franchise.

Before the conversation shifted to the show, Fallon mentioned that Mackie had earned an Emmy nomination for his guest appearance on Seth Rogen’s Apple TV+ series The Studio.

The new Captain America revealed that he was on a set when he learned about the nomination. Still, due to being constantly snubbed for his white co-stars, he automatically assumed the nomination was for someone else, not him.

Per Variety

“I’m on set… and I look over and everybody’s like ‘Congratulations!’ And I was like, ‘Oh, what white dude got nominated?'” Mackie said. “Because I’m the white dude legend when it comes to nominations and wins. I made Ryan Gosling famous. I made Jeremy Renner famous. I made Bryan Cranston famous. I now made Ron Howard famous! I’m like, if you want to get nominated, I’m the dude. You know what I mean?”

A History of Snubbing

Mackie is discussing the numerous times he and others felt he should have received some award recognition, but all the praise goes to the white men. Mackie was Ryan Gosling’s co-star in 2006’s Half Nelson, for which Gosling earned an Academy Award nomination, but it was crickets for Mackie.

In 2008, Mackie starred alongside Jeremy Renner in the exceptional film The Hurt Locker, which went on to win Best Picture and earn Renner an Oscar nomination.

He also played Martin Luther King Jr. opposite Bryan Cranston’s Lyndon B. Johnson in the HBO original film, All the Way, and, yes, if you guessed it, Cranston was nominated for an Emmy, while the Captain America: Brave New World star received no recognition.

So basically, if you’re a white actor cast alongside Anthony Mackie, chances are you are going to get nominated for something.

But we’re rooting for Mackie to bring home that Emmy; it’s been a long time coming.
