An era in New York City radio has ended. Today (June 18), Hot 97’s Angie Martinez, or the “Voice of New York” as some know her, announced that she’s leaving her position at Hip-Hop’s premiere radio station via Instagram.
Per Martinez:
Today I resigned from HOT97. I am grateful to the Emmis family for my time with the company and the immeasurable way that it has shaped my life. We made history together in so many ways and I will cherish those memories and my friendships forever. This was one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever had to make but ultimately it is time to move on, to grow and to be challenged in new ways. Saying goodbye is always emotional and bitter sweet but I am extremely excited about the future. Thank you HOT97 and most importantly….the listeners… for an unimaginable journey. Today will be my last show stay tuned…. Love, angie
Hot 97 issued an official statement not long after Martinez’s announcement. “WQHT HOT 97 FM confirms the departure of Angie Martinez,” Hot 97 said. “Angie has given over 20 years of service to the HOT 97 brand, where she exemplified professionalism and passion for music. We thank her deeply for her commitment to Hip Hop, radio, and broadcasting.”
Assistant Program Director, Ebro Darden, a longtime colleague of Martinez also chimed in. “I have worked with Angie side by side for many years and there aren’t words to express how amazing she is. HOT 97 will always love her. Thank you Angie!,” he said in a separate statement.
Needless to say that Hot 97 will not be the same without The Bronx native on air. As we big adieu to a radio legend and await her next power move, take your time to show Angie Martinez your appreciation in the comments.
