Darryl McDaniels of the legendary Hip-Hop group Run-DMC is taking a break from rapping to do some much needed work in the world of comic book production.
After hiring a bevy of Latino illustrators and writers, McDaniels is addressing real societal affairs in his avant-garde comic book, which boasts characters of Hispanic background.
“I didn’t want to be another rapper who was trying to capitalize on the Hip-Hop genre just because I had a hit record,” McDaniels told the New York Daily News. “I wanted to tackle real issues head on.”
The Hollis Queens representer and longtime lover of comics joined forces with visionary curator Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez to bring the book to life.
“Women are attacked, abused or killed an amazing number of times in comic books and we don’t want to do that,” said Miranda-Rodriguez. “We don’t want to glorify abuse or victimize women. You will see yourself in the book because you are supposed to see yourself in the book.”
DMC also reinvents himself as a superhero in the zine that brings issues such as AIDS, teen pregnancy and drug addiction to a forefront. Talk about saving the day.
Issue number one hits shelves October 29, 2014. To pre-order, please visit HERE.
