With a surprising 5-1 record, the Dallas Cowboys have gone from a perennial also ran to a dark horse Super Bowl contender. But even as a respectable team on the field, depressingly dumb behavior seems to always be one phone call away.
How soon will it be until another Cowboy shows up in a mug shot? Safety C.J. Spillman is currently under investigation inconnection with a sexual assault investigation from September 20 at a Grapevine, Texas hotel. No arrests have been made, but that would put Spillman in the minority. Here are some fellow Cowboys who have popped up on the Dallas police blotter.
On September 7, 2012 offensive lineman Ronald Leary was arrested by Irving, Texas police for driving while intoxicated.
Star wide receiver Dez Bryant was arrested on charges of misdemeanor domestic violence in DeSoto, Texas after an unnamed source accused him of fighting with both his half brother and mother. Like they say, “The family that fights together…”

Starting nose tackle Jay Ratliff crashed his pickup truck into an 18-wheeler in January of 2013 earning himself a driving while intoxicated charge. According to the probable cause affidavit written by the arresting officer, Ratliff showed a total of 12 clues of intoxication while taking three field sobriety tests. Turn down for what?
In September of 2011, wide receiver Kevin Ogletree was arrested for outstanding warrants in Coppell, Texas. He eventually posted bond, but the last thing you want to hear your local pro football player saying is, “Hey man, I got warrants.”
Nose tackle Josh Brent was sentenced to 180 days in jail and 10 years of probation after being arrested for intoxication manslaughter in the 2013 car accident that killed his friend and teammate Jerry Brown.
In January of 1987, placekicker Rafael Septien surrendered to Denton County, Texas officials after being booked on a charge of aggravated sexual assault. He was accused of sexually absing a 10-year-old girl.
The theme of Cowboys’ players driving under the influence of alcohol took another tragic turn in 2003 when cornerback Dwayne Goodrich struck and killed to men helping another motorist on the side of the road. Goodrich was ordered to pay $6 million in civil damages.
Lance Rentzel was best known for his performance in the infamous “Ice Bowl” until 1971 when he was convicted following his arrest for indecent exposure involving a 10-year-old girl.
In November of 2001, Nate Newton and a female companion were arrested and accused of hauling 213 pounds of marijuana in their van with plans to sell it. He told ESPN he stood to make upwards of $75,000 per drug deal.
Hall of fame wide receiver Michael Irvin turned a few heads in 1996. He was indicted by a grand jury on one felony charge of cocaine possession and misdemeanor marijuana possession after being found in a hotel room with two self-employed models, drug paraphernalia and sex toys.
