The announcement of the 2015 Academy Awards nominees earlier today (January 15) quickly sparked backlash, as there was a clear omission in a bevy of the night’s biggest categories — Selma.
Director Ava DuVernay’s captivating historical drama based on the 1965 marches from Selma to Montgomery, which earned minorities the right to vote, earned a Best Picture nom and another for John Legend and Common’s “Glory.”
This left Twitter film buffs to question how a film can be nominated for the best overall picture, while it goes ignored in the Best Director, Best Actor/Actress, Best Supporting Actor/Actress, and Best Screenplay categories.
Vexing, right?
Per usual, people of note in Hollywood, media, Twitter, and general movie goers sounded off in 140 characters 0r less. Not to mention that the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag added some ironic comedy to the fold.
The 87th annual Academy Awards air on Sunday, February 22 at 7PM EST on ABC.
