Meet Kyemah McEntyre, the 18-year-old who sketched, designed and wore the hell out of her prom dress to become the talk of all social media platforms.
A senior at Cicely Tyson School of Performing Arts in East Orange, New Jersey, McEntyre wanted to do away with “European ideals and standards of beauty” when she set out to hand make her Afro-centric gown. “Being exposed to all kinds of people and cultures is the muse for my artwork,” she wrote on her Instagram page. “Don’t let anyone define you. Beautiful things happen when you take pride in yourself.”
But the college-bound artist also had a clear-cut message for past bullies. “This is for always being labeled as ‘ugly’ or ‘angry’,” McEntyre continued. “Thank God stereotypes are just opinions.”
Talk about #winning. She was even crowned Prom Queen! See more of the goddess and her gorgeous gown, below.
