Snoop Dogg took to his always entertaining Instagam page to share his thoughts on the new Roots film that debuted on the History Channel recently. He didn’t watch it.Instead the outspoken rapper and filmmaker urged his followers to boycott Roots and other slave movies like it.
In the clip he can be heard saying:
I’m sick of this shit. How the f*ck are they going to put Roots on, on Memorial Day? They going to just to keep beating that sh*t into our heads about how they did us, huh?
I ain’t watching that shit, and I advise you motherf*ckers as real n*ggas like myself; fuck them television shows. Let’s create our own shit based on today, how we live and how we inspire people today. Black is what’s real. F*ck that old sh*t.
When it comes to movies, Snoop Dogg has definitely backed up his barks with some bites. If there is any rapper who can suggest that Black people “create our own sh*t,” it’s Snoop. His filmography is actually deeper than his discography as he has starred in or played in more than 40 films and documentaries.

MURDER WAS THE CASE [1994]
Snoop Dogg made his cinematic debut in 1994 in Murder Was The Case, a straight-to-VHS movie that was based around his 1993 song of the same name. In case you forgot, the 18-minute movie was directed by Dr. Dre and Fab Five Freddy and contained plenty of what the Boondocks would call “n*gga moments.” The plot revolved around Snoop getting killed, selling his soul to the devil and coming back to life.

HALF BAKED [1998]
One of Snoop’s best-known acting gigs only required a minute of his time, literally. His brief appearance in Dave Chapelle’s 1998 weed comedy Half Baked still lives in infamy because just about every weed smoker knows someone just like the guy he played.

SOUL PLANE [2004]
Snoop Dogg, the man who just complained about Roots, played in Soul Plane, a film that many people thought “set Black folks back” when it came out in 2004.

Snoop Dogg is usually a likable character, but he was in straight villain mode in 2001’s Baby Boy. His character Rodney drew sneers just about every time he appeared on screen and he still does.

Staying true to his ethos of “create our own sh*t,” Snoop Dogg entered the pornography game in 2001 and began releasing a XXX-rated films that featured him and his homeboys providing the musical background. Very few will publicly admit to watching any one of them.

MAC & DEVIN GO TO HIGH SCHOOL [2011]
In 2011 Wiz Khalifa was a rising rap star who was getting constantly compared to Snoop Dogg. So it was only right that Snoop take Wiz under his wing and introduce him to the fine art of making bad movies. Mac & Devin Go To High School was panned by critics and fans alike. But, the silver lining is that the soundtrack featured the hit “Young, Wild and Free” with Bruno Mars.

STARSKY & HUTCH [2004]
Snoop, the man who is tired of seeing Black people depicted as slaves in movies, played a new version of 1970s figure “Huggy Bear” in the 2004 film Starsky & Hutch. At one time, Huggy Bear was considered a negative portrayal of Black people on screen.

Snoop essentially played himself in The Wash.

Say what you want about him, Snoop did appear in an Oscar-winning film at the end of the day. He played a convincing role as a wheelchair-bound hustler in 2001’s Training Day. Though he was only in it for just a few minutes, he made his presence felt.

REINCARNATED [2012]
When Snoop Dogg starred in his 2012 documentary Reincarnated, many thought that he was indeed playing a character. The film documented his evolution from Snoop Dogg to “Snoop Lion.” The “Lion” phase did not last long though.
