For the past few months, Mary J. Blige has been knee deep in the struggle. Having to go through a public divorce of her husband of 12 years, the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul has put on a brave face, gone about her business and reminded everyone why we love her so.
Today the legendary singer from New York stops by The Breakfast Club and opens up to DJ Envy, Charlamagne Tha God, and Angela Yee on why she’s getting a divorce, what she would’ve done to salvage her marriage, and just how low she’s gotten in life.
Here are the 9 things we learned from Mary J. Blige on The Breakfast Club.

1. Broken Marriage
Mary J. Blige says she wanted to keep her marriage but her ex-husband didn’t want it as much as she did because he was in love with another woman and possibly women.
2. She Would’ve Tried To Share
Mary admits that had her husband had manned up and told her about the other woman, she would’ve tried to share him with the next chick. Just wow. Love truly is a drug. Unfortunately for him, Mary said sharing with this particular woman was not an option.
3. Warning
Mary originally warned her ex she’d divorce him and even showed him the papers ready to get signed if he didn’t stop cheating on her, but that didn’t stop him.
4. Not A Sugar Mama
She refuses to give him $100,000 monthly in child support because she’s not responsible for his children (they don’t have kids together) nor his family or his girlfriend.
5. Be Happy
Mary J. Blige says that even though she’s going through a divorce, that very same divorce has her happy because she’s able to get herself back.
6. Suicidal Thoughts
Mary confesses there’s been a few times that she’s reached such a low point that suicide did cross her mind. Thank goodness it never got past that.
7. Hillary Clinton
She feels the whole Hillary Clinton segment was taken out of context. Mary also says she wanted people to see Hillary Clinton as a woman, not a politician, and was hoping she won the election. We feel her on that.
8. Faith
As far as those rumors that Mary J didn’t want her vocals on Faith’s “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore” she says that isn’t true and this is the first time she’s actually heard that. She actually “love that song” and “every time I hear it I’m like ‘Well, what happened to my part?’”
9. Things Done Changed
She feels that guys in Hip-Hop had more respect for women like her back in the 90’s.
