Twitter and local media outlets are alight with reports that there is an active shooter on or near the campus of Howard University in Washington. D.C. Police say they are on the scene and students are using the social media tool to communicate the developments.

NBC Washington reports:

D.C. police are investigating a report of an active shooter at Howard University during the historically black school’s homecoming week.

It is not immediately clear if there is a shooter.

The school’s Administration Building, which is located on the 2400 block of Sixth St. NW, has been evacuated, according to the university’s newspaper The Hilltop.

People in the area are advised to take precautions.

Howard University is celebrating its 150th homecoming celebration this weekend with thousands expected to be in attendance for the festivities. The longtime HBCU has been the site of recent racial tensions. The shooter or shooting has not yet been confirmed by police or school authorities.
