DJ Jamad is a Pittsburgh born, Atlanta based DJ that encompasses his years of wisdom with his years of turntablism. The creator the Afromentals Mixshow sat down with HipHopWired to tell us how his military background helped his career, more on his mixtape background and what he plans to do next this year.

Origin: Allentown,Pennsylvania

Current Location: Atlanta, GA

HipHopWired: How’d you get started DJing?

DJ Jamad: I would always compile mixtapes or compilations and I would listen to them in my walkman. In ’87 when I graduated I started buying a bunch of stuff from pawn shops. I joined the military in ’89, my mom told me you can go to Morehouse and work and go to school, but she was actually kicking me out…so I joined the airforce. It allowed me to get the equipment I needed and practice a lot more. I got out five years later and came to Atlanta, I defined this style and sound into a mixture of different genres. I had a good appreciation for musicianship.

Afromentals Mixshow #13

HipHopWired: Tell me about some of the DJing you’re doing now and about the Afromentals Mixshow.

DJ Jamad: The mixes I’m doing now; I had Phonte from Lil Brother host my “Black Hair Mixtape”, there was a movie that came out about Black hair…If I see something out that I can incorporate into my music I’ll do it… At the end of the day I’m really trying to entertain people I’ve moved on to having an Internet presence and basically I’ve just finished my 13th show for this year. I’m trying to be more efficient, I’d rather just focus on not giving people too much and putting it on their plate. I’m working on restructuring my website, my 10 year anniversary and a party this fall.
