Atlanta is really serious about this “robbin season” theme for season 2. Episode 2, titled “Sportin Waves” (you will find out why later) starts off with another out of the ordinary, but relatable to some, jux situation.
SPOILERS AHEAD
Alfred aka Paper Boi pays a visit to his drug plug to re-up on that gas and pills. This looks like a normal drug transaction at first, the plug praises Paper Boi’s new record but he seems kind of nervous. Al eventually notices something is not right with this meet but it’s too late as his plug pulls out a gun on him.
We become witnesses to one of the most polite robberies in the history of cable television. The stick-up kid seems genuinely sorry he is robbing Al, saying sorry every chance he gets. He even tells Al after he takes his car keys to make sure he doesn’t follow him that he would offer him a ride home but he doesn’t want him coming out of the crib shooting at him. He pulls off promising to pay him back.

Twitter had a field day processing what they just witnessed.
Only on this show.
Unfortunately for Paper Boi he has to find a new plug. He spends a good portion of the episode looking for one and they were all unsuccessful due to his newfound fame. The first meeting with a potential connect he encounters with Darius starts off good, but while they are inspecting the product he decides to take a photo Paper Boi on his phone.
Paper Boi is beside himself wondering why he would do that? He says no and gets up, while they are inspecting the goods Darius phone goes off. Darius checks the notification to see it’s a selfie of the plug with himself and Paper Boi with drugs in their hands with the caption “real ni**as working”.
On to the next one.
Darius sets up another meeting, this time with a hippy looking white plug named Andy. This has to work out right? So they sample his goods and that checks out. The plug even offers to give Paper Boi a discount because he and his girl are big fans. Things start to get a bit weird again when the plug asks for a pic but it turns out he was joking.
He asks for Paper Boi’s number and of course he’s reluctant to hand it over but he eventually puts his info in the phone. That’s it they got a new plug, everything is good until Paper Boi’s phone goes as soon as he gets in his car.
Andy sends a Paper Boi a video of his girlfriend covering doing an acoustic version of his record “Paper Boi.” He then adds Paper Boi to a group chat with his girlfriend and tries to set up a meet up. Paper Boi angrily throws his phone away and drives off.

Fresh off the polite jux situation, Paper Boi and Earn pay a visit to a bootleg Spotify situation for one of those friendly artist visits. Atlanta does an amazing job of showing just how much they have their finger on the pulse of the culture. The scene pretty much calls out every sh*tty aspect of how these visits to these white run companies (no shots) can be for Black artists.

Things start off bad for Earn and his artist immediately when talking with Peter Savage aka 35 Savage who is charge of music outreach.

When 35 soon to be 36 Savage asks to hear the music Earn pulls out a CD only to find out they no longer have any disc drives in the office. They are using a state-of-the-art wireless system that’s fully integrated with the platform.
Peter then asks if Earn has the song on laptop or his phone. Earn hands over his Android device and that doesn’t work either. The last and final option for the listening session is Pete’s hotmail account (who still has hotmail?). The song initially plays but that also fails so it’s on to the next part of this visit.
Paperboi is subjected to everything from pointless voiceovers, to even a lackluster performance of his song that never really gets started. We also see another in office performance going on that was a glaring reference to Bobby Shmurda’s embarrassing table dancing jig at Epic Records. Twitter quickly took notice of the moment.

Another interesting moment in the faux Spotify office was them meeting another artist named Clark County who Twitter instantly believed was the show making fun of Chance The Rapper. Sporting Chance’s signature overall looks and even eventually showing up later in the episode in hilarious YooHoo commercial that seemed to take a swipe at Chance’s Kit-Kat spot, Atlanta Twitter was beside itself.
We would love to sit at a table read for this show.

Finally, the reason why this episode was titled “Sportin Waves”. Remember the guy who just came home and is taking his residency on Paper Boi’s couch named Tracy? Well he shined very bright on this episode and his du-rag and the miraculous waves he said were baking underneath them are the reason why. Darius finally breaks Earn off with $4,000 from those puppies they sold in season 1.
Finally a break for Earn, will he mess this up though? All signs point to yes.
Tracey the ex-con immediately pitches to Earn that he should let him double it for him. Earn says he’s good but Tracy claims he can make Earn’s newfound hood fortune double by putting it on a gift card. It would seem Earn reluctantly agrees to Tracy’s pitch thanks to some backing from Paper Boi.
Tracy has a job interview today and not only does his waves have to be on point but so does his interview ensemble. The two head to the mall to do some “shopping.” We learn about the “no chase” rule that department stores implement as well that Tracy masterful exploits when he just walks out with some new shoes leaving Earn and the salesman stunned.

We also learn that Earn did the unthinkable and put all of his money on a gift card.
He used the card to make a purchase and when he swiped it was indeed a tense moment but the card eventually went through.
As soon as Earn walks out of the spot he receives a text from Tracy that they are watching him and that he should hurry up and use the entire card before he gets caught.
Meanwhile he is already at his interview. The moment of truth is about to revealed. He gets called into the office and takes off the durag and boy he wasn’t lying about his waves cause they were indeed spinning. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to hypnotize the recruiter and he didn’t get the job cause the company is “fully staffed.” Twitter went into a frenzy for this moment.
