Obama Makes First Visit To New Orleans Since Election
Obama's headed to the Big Easy. The President will touch down in New Orleans Thursday and speak to students at a historic charter school in the lower ninth ward.
Obama will speak at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Charter School, the only school to reopen in the lower ninth ward following Hurricane Katrina. This will be the second visit by a sitting President to the school. President George W. Bush visited the school on the second anniversary of Katrina.
Following his visit to the school he'll visit the University of New Orleans's recreation and fitness center for a town hall meeting at 1:15 p.m. Access to the town hall is limited and members of the public looking to attend should visit www.whitehouse.gov/advance/NewOrleansTownHall10-15-09/ to register.
The White House released a statement on the President's upcoming visit saying,
“Having toured the city five times since Katrina before becoming president, this will be the president's first event that is open to the public. This will enable the people of New Orleans to convey their thoughts, challenges, and feedback directly to him."
