Utah Elects First Black Female Mayor
History was made in the wild state of Utah after the city Saratoga Springs elected its first Black mayor.
City Councilwoman Mia Love delivered a political thrashing to challenger Jeff Francom, beating him 861 votes to his 594 as the two waged an intense battle to replace outgoing Mayor Timothy Parker.
“I am absolutely honored,” said Love of her victory. “I am so excited.”
Saratoga Springs is the first city in Utah to elect a Black woman as mayor. Incorporated in 1997, Saratoga Springs, Utah is home to an estimated 11,570 people. When sworn into office, Love will be the city's second mayor.
Black American's only comprise 1% of Utah's population.
