Unforgettable Moments In Hip-Hop In 2009

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

In 2009 there were plenty of lock-ups, more than a few come-ups and some unfortunate shake-ups that changed the game.  The world lost a king when Michael Jackson unexpectedly passed away June 25 leaving the world at a standstill. Despite leaving this earth, Michael was nominated for and won an onslaught of awards for his music while having his image immortalized in the blockbuster hit, “This Is It” complete with this video brought to life by Spike Lee.

While the world mourned the loss of the King of Pop, one of Hip-Hop's came back from a brief jail stint and rap reigned supreme, dominating headlines and remaining the buzz topic of discussion. So as we usher in the New Year, let's reflect on these past 365 days and what made them so memorable.

Kanye West Crashes The Stage At The VMAs: Kanye was seemingly having a good year. His 808s and Heartbreaks...and he had arguably the most stunning side pieces in Hip-Hop ala Amber Rose. Just when we thought things were all good with Kanye, the rapper made a very bold, very drunken move that will doubt go down in infamy replayed for years to come. At the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards Kanye had the crazy of craziest moments when he stormed the stage after country singer Taylor Swift won a VMA for ‘Video Of The Year.' During her acceptance speech Kanye spoke that infamous line that's been reprised again and again….

“I'm happy for you and Imma let you finish…but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time…OF ALL TIME.”

Following his short speech he gave the infamous “Kanye Shrug” which has been immortalized in Twitter lingo ever since and walked off. He was quickly escorted out off the premises and gave Taylor Swift the ultimately career boost. If you had no idea who Taylor Swift was then…you for damn sure know who she is now. Meanwhile, Kanye's been cast as the black sheep in music causing mainstream America to all but boycott him all together. However inappropriate and uncalled for it was, Kanye's VMA incident remains the most memorable moment of this year. Hell, it made for good television…don't act like you didn't enjoy it.

Lil Mama Jumps On Stage During “Empire State of Mind”: MTV's 2009 VMAS had not one, but two crazy moments in hip-hop. During Jay-Z's performance of “Empire State of Mind” with Alicia Keys, a certain Brooklyn MC and dance team judge extraordinaire felt the need to storm stage and represent for her state. Who could forget when Lil Mama careened onto the stage as though she belonged, stealing the spotlight from the Jigga man. Hov's response? On camera, he laughed it off saying “you're T-Paining too much.” In other words……sit your ass down. Backstage, the big man reportedly went off, blaming MTV's poor security for allowing it to happen.

Despite what happened on and off camera, who could forget Lil Momma hitting that infamous b-boy stance beside Hov and A-Keys looking not only like the third wheel but a damn fool. The Hip-Hop community shakes its head at you girl. No excuse, you Bow Wow look-alike…no excuse.

Perez Hilton v.s. Will.I.Am: Gossip blogger Perez Hilton's words finally caught up to him when a manager from the Black Eyed Peas socked him in the face after a verbal altercation with Will.I.Am. According to Perez he was wrongfully attacked for calling the BEP front man a fa**ot and he posted a video online weeping about the “traumatic” incident. Will.I.Am also posted a video online denying the allegations and shaking it off.  Peep both sides of the story below.

Perez Hilton Talks About  Wil.I.Am-

Wil.I.Am Responds To Perez Hilton-

Soulja Boy Shows Off His Remote Control Lambo Chain: Just when you though DeAndre Way couldn't get any more ignorant with his “Rich Ni&*ga Sh&t” Youtube series, Soulja Boy took things to new heights. The 19-year-old showed off the latest addition to his jewelry collection a remote control Lamborghini chain. Both the Lamborghini and the remote were iced out in Black diamonds with their worth estimated to be well into the millions. Check the clip where Soulja Boy takes the words right out my mouth, “They never shoulda gave you ni*^as money.” SMH….

Nas v.s. Kelis: Nas and Kelis no doubt had one of the craziest years in hip-hop. The couple went from giving fans a peak into their bedroom antics via the songstress' "Blindfold me" video, to a fierce court battle airing out each other's dirty laundry. Kelis was pregnant with their son Knight and reportedly only eating off of gift cards. Luckily for her, she somehow managed the ultimate come-up, 51 stacks of Nasir's hard earned money a month. Her song, "I hate you" so much right now seems more than fitting as Nas continues to empty his pockets and she tries to revitalize her singing carrer. See what happens to a woman scorned brothas....be careful...

Hurricane Chris Performs For The House of Representatives: In another WTF moment of the year, Hurricane Chris took coonery to new heights when he performed for members of the Louisiana House of Representatives. In June of 2009, a video surfaced of Chris appearing in an Easter suit in front of the house by request of his godmother, Representative Barbara Norton. Chris makes a “special” guest appearance braided and beaded up attempting to get the reps “Ratcheeet…ratcheeeet” with a performance of “Halle Berry.” There's not much else to say about this one. Let's just file it as the “Epic Fail of The Year” for Hip-Hop. SMH…

Run-DMC Has Street Named After Them: Run-DMC was commemorated in a new way when a Hollis, Queens Street was named after the rap innovators. The corner of 205th Street and Hollis Avenue was renamed “Run-DMC JMJ Way” in honor of the trio on August 30. New York's Hip-Hop Summit Youth Council supported a petition for the street renaming and the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year as well.

T.I. Comes Home Early, Everyone Else Goes In: T.I. shocked fans of the Grand Hustle mastermind when he suddenly popped out of prison months earlier than expected. T.I. was originally supposed to be released from an Arkansas federal prison in March of 2010 but was released in December to a halfway house. News of his release spread quickly leading some to speculate that T.I.'s either the luckiest felon on earth or the biggest snitch of all time. Either way who really cares? Since his release he's been reportedly in the studio and is set to finally marry longtime girlfriend/ baby momma/ obvious ride or die chick, Tiny.

While T.I.'s a lucky felon, many of his other Hip-Hop counterparts weren't so lucky, in particular three of his “patnas” from the South; Lil Boosie, Gucci Mane and Lil Wayne.

Lil Boosie Goes To Jail: Boosie Bad Azz no doubt had a rough time this year. Things took a dramatic turn for the worse in November when a judge determined that Boosie violated his house arrest and immediately sent him to jail. Instead of doing two years behind bars as scheduled, his prison term was doubled to four.  We won't be hearing too much from Boosie next year, or the year after…or the year after that either. DAMN!

Gucci Mane Goes To Jail: Just weeks before Gucci Mane was set to release his State vs Radric Davis album, word got out that Gucci was in jail. Gucci was taken to jail for parole violation, more specifically for testing positive for cocaine and marijuana. He was sentenced to 12 months but is expected to be out in six. The cover art for his State V.S. Radric Davis album was more than fitting. If that's not art imitating life….smh….

Lil Wayne Pleads Guilty To Gun Charge: Lil Wayne's year went abruptly downhill after he made the crazy decision to plead guilty to a federal gun charge stemming from a search of his tour bus by police in 2007. Through the plea his fate was set and he'll be sentenced to up to a year in jail in February of the New Year. Wayne will also face federal drug charges in Arizona after substances were found on his bus there. Damn Weezy…

Lil Wayne And Drake  Perform "Every Girl" With Pre-Pubsecent Girls: At The 2009 BET awards fans of Lil Wayne and Young Money's poster boy, Drake, were shocked when the pair hit the stage to perform their hit single "Every Girl." No it wasn't the lyrics about relating sex to chopping up a steak, it was the bevy of little girls on stage for the performance. Wayne's daughter and a group of her friends hit the stage to back up Wayne and Drizzy, who mind you sat lamely on a stool, and helped the duo proclaim that they wanted to f*ck  every girl in the world. Hmmm...innapropiate much? Peep the clip below.

Gone Too Soon; Hip-Hop Deaths:

DJ Mr. Magic: Mr. Magic was a hip-hop pioneer and had a span in Hip-Hop of well over 20 years. His beginnings were at WBLS in New York working with the Rap Attack crew of Marley Marl and Fly Ty. Magic's tenure extended to his membership in the legendary Juice crew under the alias Sir Juice. This Hip-Hop icon got props props in songs from Biggie, Tupac, Nas and Whodini all of which paid homage to his ability to open doors for those to come in the future. Hip-Hop's flag flew at half stance October 2 when Mr. Magic passed away of a heart attack at just 53 years old.

Baatin: Another unfortunate loss in 2009 was Baatin from eclectic Hip-hop group Slum Village. Titus Baatin Glover passed away August 1. The 35-year-old founding member was found dead in his hometown of Detroit and laid to rest at a funeral attended by over 200 of his fans. During his time Baatin helped the group release their Fan-Tas-Tic album in 1997 and Fantastic, Vol. 2 in 2000.

DJ Roc Raida: Grandmaster Roc Raida passed away unexpectedly on September 19. Details of the cause of death still remain unknown to protect the privacy of the family. The first to announce his unexpected passing to the world was Busta Rhymes he took to his Twitter to say, “I am sorry 2 say that on this day at 2:05 Sept 19th we lost another incredible life...Dj Roc Raida died 2day my personal Dj is gone...”Roc Raida was an original member of the EX-Ecutioners DJ group widely noted for their turntable skills. He was 37.

Crooked I Has Words for Benzino [Video Included]

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

“We on the West Coast man, we ain't f*ckin' around, we not playing around.  Not at all.  I'm doing this Slaughterhouse sh*t, that's what the f*ck I'm doing.  So if you respect me, you will stop all that.  If you don't respect me, then it's gonna go where it's gotta go.”

Whether it be called a plea to cease fire or a subtle warning, Crooked I is clearly becoming fed up with the antics of Benzino as he continues to attack his Slaughterhouse brother Royce Da 5'9.

In a video that appeared earlier today, the Boston rapper/ former co-owner of The Source went on to clarify his beef with the Detroit native, adding that Raekwon's verse for “Break to Build” was in no shape or form meant to show some Rae picking up the beef.

The video did, however, show an unnecessary showcase of the rapper trying to be entirely too bold as a firearm was (more...)

10. Mixtape for Honorable Mention - J. Cole: The Warm Up

With all of this frenzy about Drake, there hasn't been much space for other up and comers to breathe and get their own spotlight to showcase what they had to bring.  As some people wait, others grab for their shine and North Carolina's own J. Cole made sure that his trip to New York wouldn't be for nothing.  Finding his way into the office of Jay-Z and leaving under the Roc Nation's label, the young rapper delivered this mixtape as a sample of things to come in the future, hence the title The Warm Up. Although it was a mixtape, the release was treated as an album as Cole didn't just attack instrumentals, he actually made developed songs which had substance to match his lyricism.

Bringing effective verses for The Blueprint III and Attention Deficit showed a rapper on a mission to put himself at the forefront and outshine those beside him, even his own boss if necessary.  In preparation for his actual debut Lights Please, Cole has promised that he has saved the best for the grand entrance.  The impact of The Warm Up with The Next Up on the way only creates high expectations for Roc Nation's first artist, but his ability and potential so far only makes the debut something to definitely look forward to.

J. Cole - "Dreams"

J. Cole - "Dead Presidents"

9. Rick Ross: Deeper Than Rap

When news of his past as a correctional officer sprang, Ross' credibility as a rapper was placed in front of a firing squad.  His whole career now came off as a lie.  With 50 Cent adding fuel, the Bawse's tales about a criminal background and dealing drugs was denied by the fans as all they saw was a man with a badge.  Upon the actual release of the record, there was speculation as to how he would go about the project with his past placed in the forefront, but the rapper was able to deliver a third number one album in the end.  No matter what his past was, not even 50 Cent could take away from the fact that Ross has always been able to deliver good music with phenomenal production.  Outside of production, Ross was able to establish the fact that he is more than a Florida-based Young Jeezy as he has gradually stepped up his lyrical presence with each new record.

Rick Ross - "Yacht Club"

Rick Ross - "Mayback Music 2"

8. Joe Budden: Padded Room

After Joe Budden released his debut album in 2003, the rapper from Jersey had the appeal to make him a dominant figure in the Def Jam roster.  The cards, however, did not play in his favor as his sophomore album was shelved indefinitely along with having his career placed on hold.  Keeping himself afloat through his Mood Muzik series, Joey showed fans a side of him established in tracks off of his debut such as “10 minutes” and “Calm Down” where he wore his heart on his sleeve for everyone to see.  As 2008 came to a close, the release of Halfway House set off a domino effect for the rapper.

Not only was he able to introduce Slaughterhouse to rap, but it also opened up the gate for him to finally release a second album.  Padded Room played off the same vein as his mixtape series, blending his personal thought with exceptional lyricism.  He was able to establish the fact that the mind of Budden is only one that he could ever understand, and even he has issues coming to grips with it.  Above all else, Padded Room served as a catalyst and brought the return of Jumpoff as he has owned 2009 with subsequent releases alongside Slaughterhouse and especially on the solo tip.

Joe Budden - "In My Sleep"

Joe Budden - "Blood On The Wall"

7. Eminem: Relapse

With a five-year hiatus since the release of Encore, the music game made a transition from hard hitting lyrics and imagery to bubble gum music that was generally geared for the club.  Substance was going farther and farther to the way side as fans were striving away from dissecting metaphors and double meanings.  When “Crack A Bottle” dropped, there was a glimpse of hope that the blonde rapper was returning.  The first appearance, however, showed Eminem with his natural brown hair and as a man that was fighting his eternal demons and dealing with the death of his best friend, another failed marriage with Kim and a drug addiction that found him placed in rehab.  As with his previous releases, Slim Shady was willing to share his story with everyone that was willing to hear.

Listening closely to the album, fans will come to feel as though the rapper is still struggling with his addiction and gradually begins to clean himself up as the songs wind down to the end.  It's almost as though Relapse was his own 12 step program to recovery.  Transitioning from Slimy Shady to Eminem, the rapper comes off as if he's going through an identity crisis, but in actuality he's really getting back into the swing of things.  Although most of Black America might not relate to the actual content of Relapse, his skill was still present, even in an unstable state, and only left expectations for what he would offer with Relapse 2 once his head was fully clear.

Eminem - "Stay Wide Awake"

Eminem - "Beautiful"

6. Jay-Z: Blueprint III

Ever since the curtain “closed” for Jay-Z after The Black Album, fans and artists have continued to question why he keeps coming back.  Being his third album since “retiring”, The Blueprint III remains in the same vein as the original Blueprint in 2001 where Mr. Carter sets out not to follow trends, but set a new trend.  After shaking up the industry with “D.O.A. (Death of Autotune)”, Jay was able to showcase an album that wasn't necessarily meant to rehash the same story of his past, but instead step into the future.  Think of it a sequel to Kingdom Come. At 40, Hov realizes that he must escape the pitfall of becoming a broken record and uses the third installment of the series to show progression in his artistic growth using a heavy amount of experimentation with production that makes him come off as a European version of himself.

The album marked the return of Jay's dominance and his grip on the Hip Hop game.  You might not be able to teach an old dog new tricks, but clearly a wise man knows how to keep themselves above the pact no matter how long they have been in the game.  Why try and keep up with the young crowd when his history already places him at the finish line?  With this marking his 11th album, Jay shows that he isn't going anywhere, anytime soon.  The man created an anthem for New York with “Empire State of Mind”.  Now what gets better than that?

Jay-Z - "Already Home"

Jay-Z feat. J. Cole - "A Star Is Born"

5. Ghostface Killah: Ghostdini: The Wizard Of Poetry In Emerald City

As some rappers begin to grow older in a game where youth is deemed as dominant, many try to find ways to adapt to trends going on currently to make sure that they can even last with the new generation of artists.  Wu Tang Clan's own Ghostface Killah, however, has never been an MC to adapt to his surroundings, but more of evolving his own particular talents.  Aside from telling street tales alongside Raekwon, Tony Starks is also quite the ladies man and has a career of music filled with material paying homage to the opposite sex.

It is with this that an artist only with the caliber of Ghost that he would be able to create a project such as The Wizard of Poetry which is essentially an album saturated to appeal to women, with the necessary flavor of Ironman to make sure that he maintains his male audience.  Ghost makes it clear that no matter who you are, no one can avoid trials of the heart as they deal with chasing the girl, getting the girl and even losing the girl.  An individual such as Starks that has kept it real on wax shows that even a gangster can get lonely too.

Ghostface - "Forever"

Ghostface feat. Fabolous - "Guest House"

4. Clipse: Til The Casket Drops

Proclaiming that the third time's the charge, the rap duo from Virginia returned in 2009 refreshed and with a more positive outlook than what was left from their dark sophomore album Hell Hath No Fury. This new project has some of the same formula from the previous releases, but unlike the two prior, the duo seems to have a new lease on life this time around and are embracing the finer things in life such as family and friends.  Going through countless trials in their career, Till The Casket Drops serves like a confessional as they step forth to profess their sins and strip away of their past troubles.

With a clean conscience, the Thornton brothers are reborn and having already showcasing their talents as rappers, are feeling themselves this go around, but with good reason as their talent has never been denied, they were just never given the proper situation to deliver.  To keep it plain and simple, these dudes are living and loving life now.  The climb to the top of the mountain has left its bruises and scars for the duo, but the view from above has made everything before worth the opportunity now.

Clipse - "Doorman"

Clipse - "Freedom"

3. Slaughterhouse: Self Titled Album

As individuals, Joell Ortiz, Joe Budden, Crooked I and Royce Da 5'9” were all established lyricists that were a problem behind the microphone, but were also never given the proper outlet to exercise their skills to the masses.  All coming from different parts of the country, they all had one common goal which was to simply rap.  Outside of Royce, the other three were dealing with their solo albums facing setbacks and complications.  Assembling to form Slaughterhouse, the four rappers showed exactly what it means to be a lyricist.  Not worrying about the money or sales and only seeing it as a means to preserve the essence of Hip Hop, the four-headed monster was able to release a project infused with hard hitting lyrics and countless reasons to keep hitting rewind.

The worst part, but best for them, was the fact that it was hard to figure out who was the best as each artist was able to go toe to toe with one another which only made the friendly competition even more entertaining to hear as a listener.  Add on the fact that they actually made songs instead of spitting lyrics throughout the whole project, rap's Voltron is clearly an issue.  The album was able to set the bar for MCs to step up their game and to this day, no other album has even reached the bar that these four have been able to establish.

Slaughterhouse - "Not Tonight"

Slaughterhouse - "Cuckoo"

2. Raekwon: Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2

The problem with creating a sequel is trying to duplicate the original product.  An even harder task is to create a new project that finds a way to outdo the first offering.  After releasing Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, creating a follow up to such a debut was becoming quite a challenge for Raekwon as the two following releases failed to hold a candle to his first offering.  Maybe running out of options, it only made sense to return to what catapulted him to his fame.  With Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, Pt. 2, the Chef not only follows in the footsteps of the prequel, it was also a worthy addition as it.

Although nothing can ever truly match the first movie, Part 2 established the fact that Rae still had the ability to craft a masterpiece in today's climate of music and that presence in the mainstream does not determine the authenticity of a rapper's project.  Since the underwhelming release of 8 Diagrams, some fans may have become doubtful of the Wu Tang Clan, but alongside his partners in rhyme, particularly Method Man and Ghostface Killah, Wu Tang still ain't nothing to f*ck with.

Raekwon - "Pyrex Vision"

Raekwon feat. Beanie Sigel - "Have Mercy"

  1. 1. Wale: Attention Deficit

First impressions make a grand statement about a person, especially a rapper first entering the mainstream realm.  Once people develop an opinion about a rapper, it's hard to shake it so it is essential that the lasting impression is one that wants more.  Known mainly for his work on the mixtape circuit, Wale spent 2009 introducing himself outside of freestyles and over industry beats.  Stepping out with “Chillin”, however, might not have been the best foot forward as he was portrayed as a pop act alongside Lady Gaga and could have turned fans away.

Scratching deeper past the surface and actually listening to the album, the young rapper shows versatility that hasn't been shown by any other new artist or any other rapper in quite some time.  Diving into topics such as self-hate, racial barriers and triumph, the album was able to cover most aspects of life that every day people deal with.  Although some may feel that it lacked focus, it in fact was focused on establishing himself as a well rounded artist that can cover all sides of life, not just the money, cars, clothes and women.

Wale feat. J. Cole - "Beautiful Bliss"

Wale - "Contemplate"

Top 5 Worst Songs Of 2009

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

As we look back at a year with classic hits from Jay-Z, Drake, Lil Wayne, Eminem, and many other artists, we can say that 2009 was a pretty good year in Hip-Hop music. However, no matter what the year is, we are always left with songs which make us scratch our heads and wonder: “What were they thinking?” These are Hip-Hop Wired 5 worst songs of 2009:

1. Arab- "LOL (Laugh Out Loud)"
For those who aren't familiar with Arab, we can simply label him as Soulja Boy's wingman. The best friend of the popular rapper who use to do production and assist Soulja Boy on hooks before he became a household name. However, when it was time for Arab to try and blow, Arab left us with what he thought would be one of the hottest songs of the year, “LOL.” Unfortunately for Arab, the only “Laughing Out Loud” anyone was doing was at his embarrassing attempt to rap. With horrible lyrics like “I the hoe, way up here in Idaho”
and “Haters pulling out they hair but I'm the type that never cares,”
Arab's solo career ended before it even began:

There's no way Soulja Boy knew about this….

2. Flava Flav- "I'll Never Let You Go"
Maybe it's because older people are usually the last ones to hear the news, but someone definitely did not tell Flava Flav that Jay-Z put a "Death To Auto" tune back in June. Flava Flav is known for being one of the biggest hype men of all time and busting out a couple of decent 16 bars once in awhile. So why he decided that R&B was the next move for his career will always puzzle me. Maybe it's because he's singing his heart out on this song, or because he's an old man trying to stay hip in a young mans game. I almost feel sorry for him and want to give the old man a pass on this one. However, that still does not excuse that this is one of the worst songs of 2009.
Flava Flav makes Kanye sound like Luther Vandross:

Sorry Flav “I Cant Do Nothing For Ya Man”

3. Bangs- "Let Me Take You To The Movies"
When you hear a gentleman say “Let me take you to the movies,” it's usually a nice gesture that sounds like a night of fun and excitement. It's when Sudan rapper Bangs says it that it becomes a huge internet mockery for everyone to quote and laugh about. The rapper's music video does not help the song either, as Bangs just raps in front of a green screen with a bunch of random images of cars, money, and jewelry he obviously doesn't have. When the song was played on Eminem's radio station “Shade 45's,” Americans told Bangs how they truly felt and ridiculed him for almost 10 minutes. ( http://www.worldstarhiphop.com/videos/video.php?v=wshhXay5et1Q85591wz0)

At least all of the worst songs of 2009 didn't come from America:

4. R. Kelly Ft. OJ Da Juiceman – "Superman High"
R. Kelly has had numerous amounts of number 1 hit songs and may be one of the most recognizable faces in the R&B industry. However, when R Kelly tried to branch out into Hip-Hop, it was obvious that some artists need to stick at what they are good at. In this horrible attempt for a banging club song R Kelly doesn't make his transition any better while bringing in OJ, one of the most annoying "hype man" to ever grip the mic. Even adding the ad lib king Gucci with a couple of “Burrrrs” couldn't make this song bearable to listen to.

Maybe R Kelly should patch up things with Hov, cuz OJ is just not working……. Maybe Trey Songz was right after all.

5. Ron Browz- "Give Me 20 Dollars"
When I heard “Pop Champagne” late last year, I thought to myself, “There is no way Ron Browz will ever be allowed to put out another song.” Unfortunately, I was wrong and not only was I wrong, somehow the song was even worst then “Pop Champagne.” Words cannot even describe how fast my finger would hit the skip button if the first syllable of “Gimme“ was said in the car or on my computer. I would tell you what this song is about, but in all honesty I don't think I've ever listened to the whole thing straight through. For those who think they can, here is the video. Y'all are more of a man then I ever will be.

Maybe that auto-tune Flav song isn't that bad after all!

Lets hope 2010 doesn't disappoint us with horrible songs because clearly 2009 didn't.

Top Hip Hop "Beefs" Of 2009

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Young Jeezy vs. Gucci Mane

“I'm on my Louie sh*t today damn some gucci mane/
Bi%ch ni%$as still on my dick they like groupies mane/
Can't keep their lips closed they worse than coochies mane
in that fruity looking stupid like some coogi mane/
Let you trick me off these streets you must be stupid mane”

Of all the beefs that happened in 2009, this beef actually had substance and history.  It even left casualties in its wake.  For Gucci Mane and Young Jeezy, the two have been going back and forth since the release of “So Icey.”  Once the hit placed on Gucci's chain went sour, La Flare found himself behind bars as Jeezy's fame skyrocketed and he became the voice of Atlanta.  As soon as Gucci was released, however, buzz was at an all time high as 2009 was definitely his year for music with endless musical product for listeners.  With alleged shots going at the camp of CTE, Jeezy felt it was necessary to strap up once again and hit his former foe with “24, 23” going at Gucci along with his partner in rhyme OJ Da Juiceman.  Tension only set up the potential for the war to continue, as if it was only on pause while Gucci was incarcerated.  The difference in this beef is the fact that reconciliation was able to occur between both parties as the fear resided that their issues might pull in their devoted fans.  Now on the same accord and willing to co-exist, the two have even taken things as far as collaborating with each other once again.

Young Jeezy - "24,23 (Kobe/Lebron)"

Gucci Mane - "My Own Worst Enemy"

Rick Ross vs. 50 Cent

A correctional officer, sex tapes, Pimpin' Curly.  This is just the tip of the iceberg of the rivalry between 50 Cent and Rick Ross.  Unlike past beefs for the New York native, it was actually Ross to throw the first shot with the release of “Mafia Music,” but it only served as a green light for Fif to resort to his usual tactics on the lyrical, as well as entertaining aspect.  As the biggest Boss tried to flex his lyrical muscle, Curtis kept things funny.  The man took Ross' baby mother on a shopping spree and then took his other old piece and filmed a sex tape.  The rapper has committed many low blows, but this time around trumps anything that happened with Ja Rule.  What was even funnier is the fact that the idle threats from both side became laughable mainly based off of Fif's exploits and making Ross a flat out watching punch line.  With these two, nobody can even remember one lyric that was mentioned, but we were all very entertained and laughing the whole time.

Rick Ross - "Valley Of Death"

50 Cent - "Officer Ricky"

Rick Ross - "Kiss My Pinky Ring"

50 Cent - "Tia Told Me"

Jay-Z vs. Beanie Sigel

Honor, trust, respect
Devotion, friendship, loyalty
karma, team, us, Roc
silence, the 'eagle, bang

This battle would have to be marked as the surprise for 2009.  As everyone already knew that Roc-A-Fella was a distant memory, Beanie Sigel used his time wisely to sit and think about the Dynasty that crumbled in front of him.  Releasing the track “Average Cat” gave the Philly native the platform to air out some of the past along with some current situations between himself and Jay-Z.  Through the words of the Broad Street Bully, behind closed doors, La Familia wasn't actually the perfect picture and there was a lot of shady business going on.  Teaming up with 50 Cent only added more fuel as Fif and Jay have continued to spar back and forth since “How to Rob” and resulted in the G-Unit general picking up the shooter that Hov left stranded.  Although Jay has yet to respond on track, Beans has continued to make his point felt with his own assault at Jigga.

Beanie Sigel - "Average Cat"

Joe Budden vs. Raekwon

This battle is strictly based off pride and respect above all else.  In the end, no actual diss tracks went back and forth, but there were repercussions for Joe Budden.  Being discontent with his placement on a rapper's list made by VIBE, Jumpoff chose Method Man to be his victim making the claim that he was better than him as a lyricist and shouldn't be below him.  Such words created a tailspin of drama as rappers like Melle Mel, Busta Rhymes and Redman felt the need to clear Joey's fantasy and give him a slap on the wrist for uttering disrespectful words.  Raekwon, however, took a more direct approach through a conversation that resulted in Budden talking/ Vlogging with a steak on his eye.  There were some actual diss tracks coming from the likes of Inspectah Deck, but let's all be honest…who really remembers that?  It might have been full of stingers, but nobody really cared in the end.  A rap battle would have been an epic event, but clearly respect isn't something that can't be established on wax anymore.  And Mickey Factz…I'm gonna need you to do better and not just report.

Jay-Z vs. Auto-Tune

“This is death of Auto-Tune, moment of silence…”

With the Hip Hop world becoming over saturated with the Auto-Tune technology, the rap game was beginning to fall into complacency as rappers were looking to the voice changer or T-Pain in order to garner a hit record in the industry.  After dropping this record, the Hip Hop industry was divided with some taking the side of Jay and others calling him a hater that was just trying to stop people from getting money.  In response, Jay stated that he was only trying to make sure that the genre didn't become stale and remembered to remain diverse instead of all falling into the same accord.  Without coming off as an old head hating on the new generation, Jay was able to create a new foundation and set the bar once again for rappers.  As long as he has the ability to pick up the microphone, he will make sure that the culture never turns into a simple fad.

Juelz Santana and Jim Jones vs. Cam'Ron

The disappearance of Cam'Ron made many Hip-Hop fans question the future of the Dipset movement.  With Juelz and Jim Jones leading the pack, the two seemed to be the only reps for the Diplomats as the rest of the roster wasn't as visible anymore pursuing their own careers.  The fact that the duo were seen aligning themselves with 50 Cent, who had been in a beef with Killa before he went AWOL didn't help matters.  Once Cam came back out of hiding, Jones started flipping sides saying that he did and didn't have phone conversations with Cam, which only made matters worse for those watching the scene from the outside.  Interviews continued without any party actually having an official reconciliation and showed Cam making allegations that Juelz was addicted to syrup which resulted in Santana saying that Killa had shady business going on with his money and even added that Cam might have had a little addiction to Percocet.  The issue boiled over once Cam'Ron stated that the Diplomats was officially over, but Jones quickly stepped in to state that the movement was much bigger than Cam and could not just be ended with the snap of a finger.  Yet another family feud gone horribly wrong.

Soulja Boy vs. Bow Wow

Really not worth too much thought and analysis, this beef was quite fluffy at best.  After making “Marco Polo,” essentially putting a spark back in Bow Wow's career, the two turned from friends to foes over something simple as a Lamborghini.  Maybe some rappers don't feel comfortable with others making claims that they don't actually purchase their vehicles as a proprosed race turned into Soulja saying that Bow Wow rented his cars to Bow Wow showing the receipt to a whole bunch of other stuff that nobody really cared about anyway.  It was just a way to pass the time by and get some YouTube clicks.  Let's be lucky they put an end to the beef before it got “really” out of hand.

Eminem vs. Mariah Carey

Oh gee, is that supposed to be me in the video with the goatee?
Wow Mariah, didn't expect you to go balls out
B*tch shut the fu%k up before I put all them phone calls out
you made to my house when you was wild-n-out before Nick
When you was on my dick and give you somethin' to smile about

The battle between Eminem and Mariah Carey is one that no one will ever comprehend outside of the two involved.  Some years ago the two got together, or they didn't, but who really cares?  The point is , whatever happened between the two left a lasting impression on Shady as he has used his lyrical ability to prowl on the songstress since with constant references.  The fire was lit again with Eminem's return which produced the track “Bagpipes from Baghdad” from Relapse going at Carey and Nick Cannon.  In response, the track “Obsessed” dropped from Carey and was followed by a visual with a character that had many similarities to Slim.  No matter what she may like to admit, it was a diss track.  Never one to be outdone, Eminem unleashed his wrath with “The Warning” which looked to tear apart her credibility and added that things would only get worse for her and threatened to leak pictures and audio to further prove his point.  Although not a gritty lyrical barrage from two sides, Shady established that he was back and refused to hold back his tongue and everybody could be a potential target.

Young Jeezy vs. DJ Drama

Since dropping Trap Or Die in 2005, Young Jeezy and DJ Drama have been heavy in the mixtape circuit and were able to establish a foundation for one another.  The magic came to an end after Jeezy felt as though Drama was trying to overcharge CTE member Blood Raw too much to host a mixtape for him.  Clearly Jeezy must have put the friendship in question if he took it as far as saying “F*ck Drama,” but that's the name of the game.  As the Snowman was able to make up with Gucci, Drama was actually the catalyst with him squashing the beef between himself, Jeezy and Gucci.  Look forward to Trap Or Die Pt. 2.

Charles Hamilton vs. Everybody

Sometimes the potential of a great artist is overshadowed by their antics outside of music.  For rapper Charles Hamilton, his mouth outside of the music got the best of him.  From issues with Souljah Boy to Royce Da 5'9” to Rhymefest, he couldn't win anybody in his favor.  In trying to commemorate the late J Dilla, a misguided approach left Hamilton with the city of Detroit hating him.  After being dropped from Interscope, his former label couldn't even show love as they leaked his debut album This Perfect Life onto the Internet without second guessing.    A wild tongue, however, was tamed by an unlikely source.  During a battle rap with his “homegirl,” Sonic threw too much of her business out with the mention of an abortion.  A woman's wrath is like no other as he let her fist talk for her and knocked all of the coins out of Hamilton.  It must have been game over as he went underground until most recently to most likely re-evaluate his next approach and at least find a fan or two this time around.

Jailer Fired For Being Active Klan Member [Opinion]

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

A Florida man was fired after alerting internal investigators to an interesting tidbit about his life outside of work.

Wayne Kerschner, a detention officer within the Alachua County Department of Corrections, was released from his job as a detention officer with the county after he defended the ideals of the Ku Klux Klan while noting that the hate-infused group is nothing more than a faith-based organization.

An internal report revealed that Kerschner paid annual group dues to the Southern and United Northern Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, frequently blogged on KKK websites, and attended a rally in Tennessee, all done while he was employed with Alachua County.

A rule within the department banning the employment of men and women that are members of subversive or terrorist organizations made way for Kerschner, an officer with the Klan, to be let go.

He worked as a guard for four years.

Now, in no way do I condone the any action taken by the Klan or the present but I have to wonder whether the firing was a bit “overreaching.” Granted, the Ku Klux Klan has been a home-grown terrorist organization since its creation, but who exactly deems one organization a threat? Better question, if the affiliation of one person with an organization that is known to cause issues within the community bad, does that not open the door for more professional persecution based on private affairs?

How long before a member of the Nation of Islam find themselves in the unemployment line for being apart of a faith-based organization?

The New Black Panther Party??

Teabaggers and Birthers???

PETA????

All of the aforementioned are organizations that, though clearly lacking the sheer history of violence and intolerance often attributed the infamous White Knights, have operated outside of legal parameters in order to have their respective voices heard and goals met.

Remember, what is seen as a positive entity to some can be viewed as a terrorist organization to others. Personally, I feel that if the man did his job well and showed no sign of favoritism or unjustifiable disdain for the people that he was assigned to watch then he should still have a job today.

But what do I know. . .I'm merely a fan of small government. . .

What do you think Hip-Hop Heads?
