Police in Brownsville Texas are reporting that parents Leticia and Alfredo Ines locked their 12-year-old daughter in a closet for a year.
The closet had very little light and the parents told the girl to do her homework through a thin sliver of light coming from behind the door.
The young girl was only allowed to leave to go to school, eat and use the bathroom.
When she had to use the bathroom at night she was instructed to use a bucket she was responsible for cleaning every morning.
The girl’s brother told school officials who then alerted police.
The mother has since admitted to police that she locked her in the closet because she kept taking food out of the refrigerator.
Both parents are being held on charges of unlawful restraint and injury to a child.
