Former Detroit Council Woman Sentenced To Three Years In Prison For Bribery
Former Detroit council woman and wife to Representative John Conyers, Monica Conyers, has been sentenced to three years behind bars for bribery.
The latest person taken to trial for a Detroit corruption scandal wanted an appeal to have her previous guilty plea revoked after she says she was “badgered” to admit her wrongdoing.
Prosecutors say Conyers and her former aide took bribes to support a company's contract with the city worth $47 million a year.
She was previously tried for the case in June and pled guilty.
A federal judge reviewed the case Wednesday and dismissed her appeal however, sealing her fate in jail.
When prison officials attempted to escort Conyers out of the court room, reports say that she was heard yelling that she planned to appeal again.
Prosecutors say Conyers and her aid collected $69,500 in total from the under the table deals.
She could have been sentenced to up to five years in prison.
