The press secretary for New York Governor David Paterson has resigned amidst the scandal surrounding his office.

Marissa Shorenstein who also acts as the Governor’s spokeswoman, announced her resignation Wednesday citing an “inability to do her job effectively.”

“It has been a privilege to serve New York State for the past two years and I thank the Governor for giving me the opportunity to do so …Due to the circumstances that have led to my unwitting involvement in recent news stories, I can no longer do my job effectively. Throughout my career I have performed my duties professionally and with integrity, basing my actions on what I believed to be true at the time. I therefore tender my resignation as Press Secretary to the Governor.”

Shorenstein is now the fifth top state official to resign in the wake of the Paterson scandal.

As previously reported, eye brows have been raised at the Governor after reports circulated that he helped one of his top aides avoid a domestic violence trial, silencing his female accuser.

The governor has vehemently denied those claims but will not seek re-election in the fall.
