Katie Washington To Become 1st Black Valedictorian From Notre Dame

POLITICS

The University of Notre Dame is known for making history on the football field, but now thanks to a woman from Gary, Indiana they are making history off the field as well.

Katie Washington, a major of  biology and minor in Catholic social teaching will make history next month as the first Black valedictorian from the University of Notre Dame.

"I am humbled," said Washington to the Northwest Indiana Times. "I am in a mode of gratitude and thanksgiving right now."

Washington definitely sets the precedent, holding a 4.0 GPA.

Although university officials said they couldn't recall ever having a Black valedictorian, they also stated that they don't keep record of their race

With all of the “firsts” going on right now, there is no reason for anyone not to feel they can rise above any circumstance.

Right on Sista

Congratulations to you!!! I am so proud of you as though you were my daughter. You are a trend setter and the best part about it is that you are humble. I pray that GOD will continue to bless you as you move on this journey. Stay focused, remain humble to HIM, and most of all stay in prayer.

I hope to meet you when I come to Hopkins as my daughter will be your cl*****mate. Nevertheless, you are now my daughter as I share the joy and pride your mom hold in her heart.

Congratulations Katie. You are truly an inspiration to all young ladies, especially African American young ladies. In addition, to your beauty inside, you are beautiful outside, as well. Keep up the great work and much success to you always.

Congratulations, Katie, on your accomplishments!! Your family as well as the world, are crying tears of joy!

Congratulations Katie on such a wonderful accomplishment/achievement. It definitely goes to show, "With God All tThings Are Possible." Continue to follow in the path that the Lord leads you. To God Be The Glory!

You are so right, Melinda, "To God be the Glory!" Katie has lived a perfect example of putting God first! There should be no question as to HOW she has arrived to this point. This beautiful young lady has put her faith in God, and only He has carried her through. I am so proud of her for her FAITH in God!!

One school fact about young KATIE WASHINGTON not often mentioned is that she attended the Banneker Achievement Center in Gary, a public elementary school that for years has recorded the highest or among the highest test scores in the state of Indiana. The prin*****l there, Sarah Givens, is a strong advocate of the "all children can..." philosophy .. meaning that gifted and talented can be developed among ALL children, regardless of income, neighborhood, race, or ethnicity, if given the right environment for learning.
