Orlando Magic hoop stars Dwight Howard and Adonal Foyle hold Gala Dinner to raise money for displaced children in Haiti.
The Gala Dinner & Caribbean Fete was held to raise money for the Kerosene Lamp Foundation, an organization founded by Foyle that empowers youth.
Dwight Howard, inspired by the success of the event, announced the launch of the Dwight Howard Fund, a new organization to help at-risk children worldwide. Howard decided to christen the foundation by donating $100,000 to help the children affected by the earthquake in Haiti.
“There have been a lot of emergency relief efforts in Haiti but there’s still a lot of work to do in the future, and I want to do my part, especially to help the kids there.”,” Howard told WBDO.com. “I’m excited to make a difference for kids in Haiti, and I’ll be counting on my fans to help me make some great things happen.”
The Dwight Howard Fund is not Howard’s first non-profit venture. In 2004, the baler established the Dwight D. Howard Foundation, Inc. which offers scholarships for students who want to go to Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy and grants for Lovell Elementary School and Memorial Middle School in Orlando. But after Howard saw the plight of the children in South Africa, he wanted his foundation to go worldwide.
“I was personally moved to do something international after spending time in South Africa last summer and finding out the impact I can make on kids from a different culture and place,” Howard told the Orlando Sentinel. “Haiti seemed like the perfect place to start and a place in particular need, especially after the earthquake.”
