A Fresno California woman is in police custody after they say she tried to kill her 3-year-old son, stabbing him an estimated 15 to 20 times before throwing him down a stairwell.

Police arrested a woman Tuesday for the crime but did not want to release her name.

She was later identified however by her sister as 30-year-old Vannessa Rincon and the toddler as 3-year-old Noah Rincon.

Police were called to the scene after neighbors reported hearing the child’s screams.

When police arrived they found the boy lying in a pool of his own blood at the bottom of a staircase with multiple stab wounds.

Police report that the woman began screaming at paramedics not to help the boy and to “stay away from him.”

While being detained, the woman admitted to police that she stabbed her child but did not give a reason why.

Her 2-month-old daughter was also found on the scene unharmed and has been taken by Child Protective Services.

The boy is alive and in critical condition at Community Regional Medical Center.

Police have not said whether the woman was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
