Allen Jones, was recently awarded $1.5 million dollars for offensive and explicit voice mails he received from a debt company.
In August of 2007, when attempting to collect a debt, Advanced Call Center Technology in Dallas, TX sent eight threatening and racist messages on Jones’ mobile phone.
Jones, who is African-American, received messages that included racial slurs as well as profanity. A collector was quoted as saying:
“Get your moth*rfuc*in A$$ up and go pick some motherfu*kin cotton fields.”
“This is your mot*erfuc*kin wake-up call you little lazy a** bit*h.”
“This shouldn’t be tolerated. Nobody should have to experience what I had to experience,” Jones was quoted as saying.
Jones sued the company in a Dallas court and was awarded $50,000 for mental anguish and $1.5 million in punitive damage. The collection calls he received were to collect a sum of $200.
