A Republican Senator in South Carolina is making headlines after he was quoted making a racial slur about The President, calling him and a candidate for governor a “Raghead.”

Senator Jake Knotts appeared on Internet political talk show, Pub Politics Thursday and while talking about State Rep. Nikki Haley, who is a woman of Indian descent, Senator Jake Knotts said,

“We’ve already got a raghead in the White House, we don’t need another raghead in the governor’s mansion.”

No audio of his statement is available because of a technical problem.

Amidst backlash from the statement, Senator Knotts has released a statement apologizing saying,

“If it had been recorded, the public would be able to hear firsthand that my ‘raghead’ comments about Obama and Haley were intended in jest. Bear in mind that this is a freewheeling, anything-goes Internet radio show that is broadcast from a pub. It’s like local political version of Saturday Night Live, which is actually where the joke came from.”

Prior to this incident State Rep. Haley has encountered a number of problems as she strives to become the state’s first female governor.

The reported favorite of the Tea Party and former Governor Sarah Palin has had two men come forward to say that they’ve had sexual relationships with her, both of which she denies.
