Rep. John Lewis To Get Medal Of Freedom Today
John Lewis Awarded The Presidential Medal Of Freedom
President Obama will honor U.S. Representative John Lewis today when the civil rights activist is awarded the Presidential Medal Of Freedom, the highest honor in the nation.
The 2010 honorees include former President George H.W. Bush, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, poet Maya Angelou, billionaire investor Warren Buffett, cellist Yo-Yo Ma and sports legends Stan Musial and Bill Russell.
Individuals are awarded the Medal of Freedom for making “an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.”
Lewis led the student civil rights movement in the 60's.
The ceremony will be held in the East Room of The White House and will stream live at http://www.whitehouse.gov/.
