Louisiana Governor Proposes Merging Southern University With PWI
Proposed Merger Of HBCU With White Institution Causes Controversy
Louisiana residents are reportedly outraged now that Gov. Bobby Jindal is pushing a bill that would merge Southern University (New Orleans) with predominantly white Institution University of New Orleans.
According to Jindal the move would help both institutions whose graduation rates have been struggling since Katrina.
“It makes no sense to have colleges blocks apart, neither one of them with graduation rates we can accept,” Jindal said at a weekly legislative news conference this week.
The Associated Press reports that more than 200 students from Southern protesting claiming that the school will lose its legacy as an HBCU.
“This is not necessarily about merging,” Republican state Sen. Conrad Appel, the writer of the bill, told New Orleans CBS affiliate WWL-TV.
“This is about the restructuring of a system of delivery of higher education services for the public sector in New Orleans.”
