Sean Bell Community Center Opens In Queens

There can be no redemption for the brutal slaying of Sean Bell nearly five years ago as police officers sprayed over 50 shots at the vehicle of the unarmed groom-to-be.

In an effort to remember the young man from Queens, the intersection now known as Sean Bell way in Jamaica, Queens is the site of today’s opening of the Sean Elijah Bell Community Center on Sutphin Boulevard.

The non-profit center should be fully operational by June and it will offer mentoring, GED and tutoring programs for children and adolescents, as well as job-training referral programs for adults.

The center was funded by a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development grant.

Bell’s life was cut short after a bachelor party celebration by three police officers that were acquitted of all charges. Hopefully this center will keep youth in the community off of the street and save a life.
