Buju Banton Asks For Reduction In Minimum 15-Year Sentence

Buju Baton Requests Sentence Reduction

When Buju Banton has his sentencing hearing later this month, the reggae artists is hoping the judge will shorten the minimum 15-year bid he could be facing.

Banton's attorney David Markis filed documents Thursday (June 9) requesting that Banton's sentence be lightened.

Markus says the sentence is “way more than necessary" and notes the singer's limited participation in the crime, clean criminal record and charitable works which he hopes will be enough to have the sentence reduced.

The documents reportedly included support statements from actor Danny Glover, Stephen Marley and Atlanta Hawks center Etan Thomas.

The Grammy winning singer also requests and acquittal and new trial.

Baton was convicted in February of conspiring to set up a cocaine deal in 2009.

He faces a minimum of 15 years in prison.

His sentencing hearing is June 23 in Tampa federal court.
