GLAAD Upset At MTV For Allowing Tyler The Creator To Win An Award

Tyler, The Creator’s recent win at the MTV VMA’s has made him another target for GLAAD.

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, has issued a statement after Odd Future’s Tyler The Creator won the MTV VMA for “Best New Artist.”

Full of controversial verses and words towards the gay and lesbian community, GLADD’s statement discusses their disappointment with the network.

“Rather than providing simply a larger platform, MTV and other networks should educate viewers about why anti-gay and misogynistic language has no place in the music industry today. Given Tyler’s history of such remarks, viewers and potential sponsors should refrain from honoring homophobia and in the future look to a more deserving artist.”

This is just one of many times Tyler has found himself in the line of fire from Gay activists groups, as earlier this year many protested in front of one his shows.

Sara Quinn from the indie duo Sara & Tegan also spoke out against Tyler the Creator earlier this year, stating:

“It is not without great hesitation and hand wringing that I enter into the discourse about Tyler, the media who glorifies and excuses misogyny and homophobia, and the community of artists that doesn’t seem remotely bothered by it. I can only hope that someone reading this might be inspired to speak out. At the very least, I will know that my voice is on the record.”
