Christopher “Dudus” Coke is a cold piece of work. No doubt, the accused Jamaican drug lord’s story is gruesome, and as his sentencing date draws near, he is hoping that a judge will have mercy on his criminal ways.
Prior to being busted in Jamaica two years ago, Coke attempted to go unnoticed by rocking a curly black wig, only to be captured on his way to turn himself in to the U.S. Embassy in Jamaica, and have his mugshot become a viral phenomenon. The same person who had one of his rivals killed with a chainsaw, and whose yearlong manhunt resulted in an uprising that took the lives of over 70 Jamaicans, appears to have turned over a new leaf. Although he initially attempted to fight extradition to the states, Coke later pleaded guilty to racketeering conspiracy charges and is facing up to 23 years behind bars.
In a last ditch effort to save himself, last fall the 43-year-old penned a letter to the judge in his case, in hopes of an auspicious outcome. “Good day to you, sir,” he wrote in the seven-page letter. “I am humbly asking if you could be lenient on me during my sentence hearing, when you are going to sentence me.” From there, Coke went down a list of reasons why he deserves special treatment, mentioning his young son who has been “traumatized” by the whole ordeal and death of his mother.
While his is a past full of twists, turns, and potential conspiracy theories, some Jamaicans have rallied behind the son of Shower Posse leader Lester Lloyd Coke, aka Jim Brown. Having taken over the infamous drug and arms smuggling gang following his father’s death in 1992, many in the Tivoli Gardens—a slum located in West Kingston—lauded Coke as a hero. Among his noteworthy acts of kindness include passing out school supplies, and throwing Easter parties for the elderly. Yet, despite his good deeds, prosecutors in the case argue that he does not deserve compassion, and have asked for him to receive the maximum sentence, and be extradited back to Jamaica.
Coke is scheduled to be sentenced in a Manhattan Court later this week.
