Remember when tongue rings were a thing? Well little Willow Smith wanted to bring the trend back, but it didn’t end so well. Being that she was probably in diapers when the tongue-ring phase had it’s first go-round, the 11-year-old, and her friend Bobbie Debarge, thought it’d be a good idea to make up for lost time. Smith posted a photo of their new mouth jewelry on her Instagram account, a move which was met with criticism.

After she, and her parents, Will and Jada, were raked over the social media coals, the young star denied that the photo was real. “It’s fake… Sorry,” she added to the post.

The bald beauty is know for her eclectic clothing style and a confidence usually not found in someone her age. Her “Whip My Hair” anthem caught the public by surprise, as the youngest member of the Smith crewwho was only 9 at the timedelivered the track with the gusto and expertise of an artists twice her age. She later signed to Roc Nation, but like other artists on the roster (i.e. Jay Electronica), the status of her label release is still up in the air.

Of course Smith is too young for a tongue ring, but her parents are usually okay with her making her own decisions when it comes to her appearance. The bigger question is whether or not she’s telling the truth about the piercing being fake.

Check out the piercing photo, and a few more examples of Smith’s Instagram aesthetic below.
