The family of Kenneth Chamberlain Sr. will not stop until they get justice. The 68-year-old was gunned down in his White Plains, N.Y. apartment last year, after NYPD officers barged into his unit. Although an investigation was opened, a grand jury opted not to go forward with charges , prompting Chamberlain’s son—Kenneth Chamberlain Jr.—to file a $20 million lawsuit against both police and the city.“This is just another step in trying to get justice for my father,” he told the New York Times.

Officer Anthony Carelli, shot Chamberlain with a .40-caliber pistol, and maintains that the veteran was attempting to attack him with a butcher knife.  However video surveillance of the incident shows officers using racial epithets, solidifying the claim that there was an abuse of power that led to his death.  While officers pinpointed the veteran as the aggressor, his son says that they used an “unreasonable and unnecessary” amount of force.

Police arrived at Chamberlain’s apartment, after his medical bracelet went off. According to the suit, he explained to authorities that he did not need assistance, yet they proceeded to break down the door. He was shot with a bean bag gun, and a Taser before the altercation turned fatal.
