Police have arrested two suspects in the shooting death of a 4-year-old Bronx boy during a basketball game last weekend, and one just happens to be a teenager. Rondell Pinkerton, 17, was taken into custody early Wednesday (July 25) and charged with murder, and criminal possession of a weapon.

Pinkerton reportedly confessed to the shooting, but said that he opened fire in an act of self-defense. He has been pinpointed by police as the one who fired the fatal shot that killed the young boy.

Another male, 26-year-old Courtney Kelly, was also arrested, and charged with criminal possession. Kelly was struck during the shootout and is recuperating at Lincoln Hospital. His late sister, Troynisha Harris was the focus of the memorial basketball game that was being held before the shooting began.

A second search of the crime scene uncovered more ballistic evidence, which included a shell casing approximately 40 feet from where the child, Lloyd Morgan, was killed.  The violent eruption is believed to have been the result of an on-going rivalry between two gangs.

Melody Nelson, a friend of the Morgan family, called the arrest “great news” but shifted the focus to the broader issue of gun violence. “He’s not the only kid,” she said of Morgan. “There’s going to be a million more.”

Aside from Morgan, two other victims were hit with stray bullets during the altercation.  One 21-year-old, was taken to the hospital, where he said to be in stable condition.
