It’s not that Rick Santorum doesn’t have faith in Mitt Romney, he’s just on the fence about his bid for president. Santorum who ran against Romney before throwing in the towel, said that the presidential hopeful will lose, if the public is focused on the wrong issues.

Clearly, this is ridiculous, but let’s humors him for a change.

Santorum believes that Romney will be defeated if the focus isn’t on his policies. “If the campaign is about issues, we win,” he told the Daily Beast.  “If it’s about Mitt Romney’s record as a businessman, then we don’t win. If it’s about Mitt Romney’s tax returns, then we don’t win. If it’s about whether people like Mitt Romney more than Barack Obama, then we don’t win.”

The aforementioned inquiries into Romney’s tax history has been brought to light as a shot at  his credibility. Romney has released two years of tax returns, as required by law, but refuses to make his financial records completely transparent for fear of bi-partisan criticism. Paying only 13 percent in taxes on over $20 million in income has raised eyebrows, as it is believed that he was given major tax breaks by putting his money in offshore accounts.

Santorum was a staunch opponent of Romney’s when he was competing against him, pegging the former governer as the worst choice to take the president to task on health care reform. “It was a primary. We were competing against each other. We had differences. Those differences pale in comparison to Obama.”

In his eyes, President Obama is running a personal smear campaign against Romney  rather than playing up his own strengths. “Obama is not really out there defending his record. He’s just attacking Romney and playing the class-warfare game. The wealthy, the rich—every other word is middle class. He says we want to unchain the banks; no one wants to unchain the banks. The idea that you’re trying to pit the money people, banks, business people against the little guy—it’s disgusting.”

No matter what Santorum’s views are on the commander in chief, the fact remains that Obama continues to lead Romney in electoral votes at 257 to 191.
